Background of the Study
Gender equality in the workplace has been a focal point of global discourse, and the hospitality industry is no exception. Despite global progress in gender equality, women remain underrepresented in leadership and management positions across various industries, including hospitality. In Sokoto State, a region that reflects the broader socio-cultural dynamics of Nigeria, gender roles are often traditionally defined, which can impact women's access to management positions within the hospitality industry. Women are typically more involved in support roles, while men dominate managerial and leadership roles in many establishments.

In recent years, however, there has been growing advocacy for gender equality and women’s empowerment, particularly in the workplace. This shift is also reflected in the Nigerian hospitality industry, where there is increasing awareness about the need to promote gender equality, not only to fulfill legal and social obligations but also to tap into the business advantages of a more inclusive and diverse leadership team. Gender diversity in management positions can foster innovation, provide diverse perspectives, and improve organizational outcomes. This study aims to appraise the current state of gender equality in hotel management positions in Sokoto State, examining the barriers that hinder women's advancement and the impact of gender diversity on hotel management outcomes.

Statement of the Problem
Despite the increasing participation of women in the workforce, there is a noticeable gender disparity in managerial positions within hotels in Sokoto State. Women are less likely to occupy top management positions in comparison to their male counterparts, and cultural norms and gender biases may limit opportunities for women in the hospitality sector. This study seeks to investigate the extent of gender inequality in hotel management positions in Sokoto State and explore the barriers that contribute to this inequality.

Objectives of the Study

1. To evaluate the representation of women in hotel management positions in Sokoto State.

2. To identify the factors contributing to gender inequality in hotel management in Sokoto State.

3. To propose recommendations for promoting gender equality in hotel management positions in Sokoto State.

Research Questions

1. What is the representation of women in hotel management positions in Sokoto State?

2. What factors contribute to gender inequality in hotel management in Sokoto State?

3. What measures can be taken to promote gender equality in hotel management positions in Sokoto State?

Research Hypotheses

1. Women are underrepresented in hotel management positions in Sokoto State.

2. Cultural norms and gender biases are significant barriers to women’s advancement in hotel management positions in Sokoto State.

3. Promoting gender equality in hotel management leads to improved organizational performance and employee satisfaction.

Scope and Limitations of the Study
This study will focus on hotels in Sokoto State, examining gender equality in management positions. It will consider both public and private hotels and investigate the barriers to female leadership in these establishments. Limitations include the potential for cultural sensitivities to influence responses and the limited representation of women in senior management positions.
